Information and data literacy is the foundation of digital competence: finding what you need, judging whether it's trustworthy, and keeping it organised. In an age of misinformation, AI-generated content, and information overload, the ability to evaluate a source critically is arguably the single most important everyday digital skill — and the one the assessment probes hardest.
What the assessment checks

Key concepts
Search is a skill, not a guess
Most people type a vague phrase and scroll. Competent searchers narrow deliberately: specific keywords, quotation marks for exact phrases, and operators/filters (date range, a specific site, a file type). When results are poor, they reformulate with different terms rather than digging deeper into bad results.
💡 Tip: The test rewards refining the query over scrolling further or giving up.
Evaluate the source: author, evidence, date, intent
A polished design proves nothing. Run four quick checks: WHO wrote it (named, with relevant expertise?), WHAT it's based on (does it cite primary sources?), WHEN (recent enough for the topic?), and WHY (is it informing you, selling you, or pushing a view?). Anonymous, undated, citation-free content that wants you to share immediately should set off alarms.
💡 Tip: When sources conflict, check their methods and dates and look for a third authoritative source — don't just pick the one you prefer.
Misinformation vs disinformation — and why it matters
Misinformation is false content shared without intent to deceive (someone passing on a wrong fact they believed). Disinformation is false content deliberately created to mislead or cause harm. The distinction is a known test point. Both spread the same way, so the defensive skill is the same: verify before believing or sharing.
💡 Tip: Know the definitions precisely: intent is what separates the two.
Headlines, framing, and misleading charts
Even true data can mislead through presentation. Dramatic headlines often overstate the article. Charts can mislead with truncated axes (starting the y-axis at 90 instead of 0 to make a tiny change look huge) or cherry-picked time ranges. A literate reader reads past the headline and inspects how data is presented, not just the numbers.
💡 Tip: Be able to say WHY a chart misleads (axis, range, missing context) — not just that it 'feels off'.
Spotting AI-generated and manipulated media
Realistic fake images, video, and audio are now easy to produce. Convincing footage is no longer proof an event happened. The competent response to a striking image or video is the same as for text: be sceptical, check whether reputable outlets report it, and look for context before believing or sharing.
💡 Tip: 'It looks real' is not verification. Convincing media can be fabricated.
Managing information so it stays usable
Finding information is half the job; keeping it usable is the other half. Clear folder structures, consistent file names, sensible version labels, and backups of anything important turn a chaotic drive into a reliable system. A file you can't find is worth nothing.
💡 Tip: Back up important data before deleting anything, and never rely on a single unsaved copy.
Worked example: a test-style scenario
This is the kind of situational-judgement question the assessment uses. Try to choose before reading the verdicts.
You read a striking health claim on a social media post with thousands of likes and no source. You're tempted to share it. What's the best response?
Popularity isn't evidence. Verifying against a credible source is the core information-literacy move.
Repetition isn't verification — the same false claim is often copied widely. Better than nothing, but weak.
Sharing unverified claims is exactly how misinformation spreads, regardless of your intent.

- ✗Confusing misinformation (no intent) with disinformation (deliberate).
- ✗Trusting a chart's headline without checking its axis and range.
